Dental hygienists work in a variety of practice settings such as general dentistry, speciality practices such as periodontics, orthodontics and paedodontics, community health centres and collective living centres, hospitals, educational institutions, research and marketing venues.
Dental hygienists are trained to work with a variety of clients including the young, the infirmed, geriatric clients and individuals with special needs. Although the primary focus of dental hygienists is preventive in origin, dental hygienists provide comprehensive therapeutic services as well.
A career in dental hygiene provides excellent income, security, flexibility, variety, prestige and respect and is one of the most popular careers. Dental hygienists are projected to be one of the fastest growing occupations through 2020. Median hourly earnings of dental hygienists in Ontario were $33.57 in 2007 depending on experience, location, and employment setting.
Effective September 1, 2007 the Dental Hygiene Act, 1991 was amended to allow dental hygienists to self-initiate and to practice without a dentist. Now you can establish your own private dental hygiene practice!
